The Tiruchy-Chennai National Highway witnessed a heavy traffic congestion as a large number of people returned to the city after the Pooja holidays, on Monday morning.
Chaos and confusion prevailed with several vehicles piling up on the route. Traffic was packed on GST Road in Maraimalai Nagar, Urapakkam, Vandalur and Perungalathur. Motorists claimed that it took four hours for them to cross the Chengalpattu-Tambaram stretch.
The Chengalpattu toll plaza was filled with vehicles and the queue to pay the toll fee stretched up to a kilometre. The traffic police posted along the highway said that they had formed special teams anticipating the traffic but it was difficult to ensure smooth flow of vehicles in the Vandalur area as flyover work was in progress. “We have to alter our plans during the Deepavali holidays,” a traffic police personnel said.
