The arrested person was identified as Younis Basha from Bengaluru. According to the police, Abdul Razak (52), who runs a shop that rents out earth movers and other equipment in St Thomas Mount, saw an online advertisement about the latest model hydraulic excavator available for Rs 25 lakh. Abdul Razak soon contacted Younis Basha and visited his place in Bengaluru.
Basha told Razak that the equipment would be delivered in two weeks but insisted on collecting the full amount before that via online transfer. Believing him, Razak transferred the amount and waited for the vehicle to arrive. When the vehicle did not come even after two weeks, Razak contacted him. But Basha demanded a few documents regarding his shop and said it would take more time.
After three months, Razak contacted Basha again, but only to be threatened to be killed if he called again. Two weeks ago, Razak filed a complaint at the St Thomas Mount police station, who formed a special team. They contacted Basha posing as customers and made him come to Chennai on Thursday for a business discussion. When Basha was waiting near Kathipara, the police team surrounded and arrested him. Police said Basha has other cheating cases filed against him in Bengaluru and Nagpur. Basha was remanded in judicial custody and sent to prison.
