Northeast monsoon likely to begin in next five days

The deputy director general of Meteorology, S Balachandran, said, “The favorable wind condition of Northeast monsoon is blowing over the South Bay of Bengal and adjoining parts of Sri Lanka. The weather system will get strengthened in the next five days and the onset of monsoon over the southern part of India is likely in that period.”

While the State will receive light to moderate rain or1 thundershower at isolated places for the next two days, the city will have an overcast sky recording a maximum and minimum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius.  

The cyclonic circulation over Gulf of Mannar has brought rains at isolated places in Tamil Nadu. The maximum amount of rainfall was recorded at Rameswaram in Ramanthapuram district (7 cm), Pamban (5 cm), Ramanathapuram (4 cm) and Tiruchendur (3 cm) in the last 24 hours. 

A low-pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal around Monday.

Previously, the Indian Meteorological Department had predicted an early onset of monsoon in the first week of October. Subsequently, the formation of cyclone Titli in the Bay of Bengal disrupted the weather system.

The government agency has also forecasted that the northeast monsoon over Tamil Nadu will be above normal.
