Police said P Sarangopal (20), a third-year engineering student from Ayanavaram and son of local businessman Prabu, had tuned his Maruti Swift car for racing but did not know how to handle the vehicle, leading to the accident.
The girl Sindhu alias Susi (8), daughter of a private firm employee, Srinivasalu, was a Class 3 student. Vijayalakshmi (28), Sindhu’s aunt stayed with the family. The incident happened on Tuesday evening, when Vijayalakshmi was escorting her niece from school when Sarangopal’s car hit them. Shocked passers-by rushed them to a hospital and beat Sarangopal before handing him over to police.
Though they booked Sarangopal for negligent driving, the Tirumangalam traffic investigation police did not arrest him. Vijayalakshmi, who was admitted at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday night, while Sindhu too died at a private hospital in the wee hours of Thursday. Police secured the youth on Thursday and remanded him in judicial custody.
