6 months jail if crackers burst beyond time limit fixed by SC: Chennai City Police
While the State government has announced that crackers can be burst only from 6 am to 7 am and 7 pm to 8 pm on Deepavali as per the directions of the Supreme Court, city police are yet to take a decision on taking legal action against those flouting the apex court’s guidelines.

We trust people and we believe that they would follow the SC’s guidelines,” said City Police Chief A K Viswanathan when DT Next contacted him.
In case of violation, we will act accordingly at that time, he added. Police sources however noted that initially, the violators will be warned.
“If they continue to flout rules, they can be booked under Section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the IPC for contempt of court with which they can be imprisoned for six months or fined Rs 1,000 or both,” a source said.
Restriction causing fear’
The Supreme Court imposing time restrictions on bursting crackers is not acceptable and this has led to fear of imprisonment of up to six months among the people, said BJP State Unit President Tamilisai Soundararajan.
She said crackers form an integral part of the festival, and without them, it is incomplete.
