5-year-old girl gets caught in mother’s shawl, dies

A five-year-old girl at Kotturpuram, who was playing with her mother’s shawl, died after reportedly being strangulated by the cloth. Police said that the mother was in the kitchen and did not know about the incident until she saw her daughter with foam in her mouth.

The deceased G Bhavana was a UKG student at a private school. She was the only child of Gokul Dharmendar, a driver, and Anne Priscilla, who is working as teacher at a private school in Chetpet. 

According to police, the incident happened on Monday around 7.30 pm, when Anne was in the kitchen preparing dinner. Police said that Bhavana had been in the habit of playing with her mother’s shawl often. When Anne stepped out of the kitchen to feed Bhavana, she found her lying unconscious with her mouth foaming upon which she rushed her to Apollo Hospital in Teynampet. 

Bhavana was later transferred to Apollo Children’s Hospital on Greams Road where she died without responding to treatment on Wednesday. On information, Kottupuram police registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC and sent her body to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Further investigation is on.
