In a follow-up action, police arrested Venkatesan (26), the patient, and two more persons, Sankar (28) and Shanmugam (30) from Thirukazhukundram, on Friday. Police said Venkatesan, who was in an inebriated condition, attempted suicide by slitting his throat on Thursday night. Soon he was rushed to the Chengalpattu medical college hospital by two of his friends. As the cut injury was not serious in nature, the attendant at the hospital asked them to wait for a while until the doctor comes.
But Venkatesan’s friends forcibly entered the ward and put him on one of the beds. They demanded immediate attention by doctors. Police said all the three were in an inebriated condition and when the training doctor, Karthick, arrived at the ward they reportedly punched him on the face for the delay. Soon after the assault, friends of Venkatesan fled the scene. As news of the assault spread, doctors and staff went on a flash protest inside the hospital claiming there was no safety for them while at work.
Based on a complaint, Chengalpattu town police registered a case. With the information given by Venkatesan, police arrested two of his friends.
