Burglars target locked houses, steal gold, diamonds, cash

At least four house breaks were reported in the city on Monday, from where burglars made away with 83 sovereigns of jewels worth Rs 20 lakh, high value diamonds, silver, and Rs 5.5 lakh in cash. All burglaries happened when the inmates were away from home.

According to police, Raja Chandra Gopal from Venkatapuram in Ambattur, who returned home at 10.30 pm on Monday night, found the door broken open and five sovereigns along with cash Rs 2 lakh burgled from the house. 

In another case, the target was the house of a retired SSI, Devaraj in Velachery. Along with his wife, Devaraj had gone to attend a funeral. When they returned, couple found their house burgled and 38 sovereigns missing. His wife Sathya Priya is a staffer at the office of the Joint Commissioner of Police (South). A complaint was lodged at the Velachery police station. In the third incident, Sheela Parthasarathy from Mylapore, who had gone to Tiruvannamalai and returned home on Monday, found 10 kg of silver and diamonds worth several lakhs of rupees burgled from her house. A complaint was lodged at the Mylapore police station.

In yet another case of house break on Monday night, Aleka, a transgender person, who returned home at Annai Sathya Nagar, realised that her house was targeted. In her complaint with Fort police station, Aleka said that her 40 sovereign jewels and Rs 50,000 cash kept in the house were missing.
