“It looks like the conman took her debit card and replaced it with a fake card during the transaction,” police said.
Police said, Narayani, a resident of Venketesan Nagar in Virugambakkam, had gone to the ATM on Tuesday evening to withdraw money. As she was struggling, the youth approached her in the guise of helping her. She realised the fraud only after she reached home when she started getting several alert messages from the bank notifying the withdrawal of money using her debit card. On suspicion, she checked the card and found that it was not hers.
There were three transaction alerts. Two alerts about the withdrawal Rs 7,000 and Rs 10,000. The third was about a transfer of Rs 20,000 from her account to another bank account, police noted. In all, Narayani lost Rs 37,000 to the fraudster.
She later filed a complaint with the Virugambakkam police. Police are checking CCTV footage of ATM kiosks to identify the suspect.
