“I thank state government for passing a resolution in state Assembly to release the seven Rajiv case convicts and to send the same to the Governor, but it was not enough. A special Assembly session should be convened like the one that was done on Mekedatu issue and all the political parties in a united tone should ask the Governor to approve their release,” said Velmurugan.

He sought permission from the police department for staging a fast for the release of seven Rajiv killing convicts but was denied sanction citing the fact that he brought large number of people to the previous protest and caused law and order problem.

However, Velmurugan said that he will approach the court and will get the permission for the proposed fast. Arputhammal, mother of Perarivalan, was about to participate in the fast but she could not.

Velmurugan, while addressing the media, said that the main reason for protesting is to make Tamil Nadu people aware about the issue and to make them join the protests on the streets for the release of the seven convicts. “Political parties, human rights activists and lawyers should come forward in large numbers and should protest for the Rajiv assassination convicts,” said Velmurugan.

He also condemned the Governor for not acting on the resolution sent by the state government on their release. “A democratically elected state government, under the powers conferred in Article 161 of the Indian Constitution, had sent the resolution to release seven convicts, but the Governor by not granting approval is acting against the democracy and also against the Constitution,” said Velmurugan.

He also criticised the state government for not taking interest in the issue. “When the state government can ask the Governor to release the three convicts in Dharmapuri bus torching incident, why is the government silent on the Rajiv convicts issue,” he questioned.
