“In 2010, the media company Mashable hosted Social Media Day on June 30, which was celebrated worldwide. Ever since then, this event took up the momentum.
Social media is very generic and doesn’t denote much to the marketing side of it, but the last three years have been exponential in the growth of digital marketing. The year 2018 has been even more significant with businesses opting to raise budgets, increase in influencers and viral content,” says Sorav Jain, Thinker-in-Chief, echoVME, who is organising the project in Chennai.
To popularise the initiative, Sorav has collaborated with the ‘Digital Marketing Question and Answers’ Facebook Community’ which has 50,000 members from across the world, mainly from India.
“A lot of other influencers agreed to come on board, and many people started nominating themselves to play host in their cities. As of now, about 18 cities are hosting this event with some good speakers and panellists. My team immediately got the logo and some creatives to celebrate the spirit of digital marketers and we rolled it to all email subscribers, social media followers garnering more interest for this event,” he explains.
What is the ultimate aim of this project? “This project will be planned on December 16 of every year henceforth so that people could discuss upcoming trends and make it a collaborative learning experience. The idea is to create awareness amidst marketers to make the right investments and for job seekers who are not yet sure of digital marketing as their career.”
Sorav concludes with a word on how digital marketing is growing in Chennai. “We are maturing! Compared to other cities like Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi, Chennai is not that active in the digital front, but I do see trends have been changing now with larger brands from here wanting to innovate on the digital front. 2019 and 2020 looks lot brighter for Chennai’s digital marketing market from business, political and career perspectives.”
