A team of the Poonamallee police intercepted the bike-borne duo on suspicion during a night patrol on Monday and preliminary investigation revealed that they — Vasanth (28) of Porur and Rajkumar (25) of Tirukazhukundram — were wanted in connection with several burglary and extortion cases.

When they were searched, the police found a phone with them and it had one picture of the pair of ivory. The police grilled them further and the duo reportedly told the police that they received the photos from a mediator, Praveenkumar.

Praveenkumar was immediately tracked down and based on his inputs, the police raided a house in Ennore that belongs to a Chinraj and seized the ivory.

He told the police that he bought the pair from unidentified people two years ago and kept them as he could not sell them. While Rajkumar and Vasanth were remanded by the Poonamallee police, Praveenkumar and Chinraj were handed over to Forest officials of Tiruvallur. Police said the Forest officials will inquire who he bought the ivory from and whether the suspects have links with international ivory smuggling racket.
