Big drop in chennai: Only 2 high-end vehicles imported in 2018

Be it demonetisation, GST regime or the frequent Income-Tax raids but the inflow of imported luxury bikes and cars in the city has dwindled to single digits in the past three years. Across the State, just 11 imported vehicles were registered in 2017-18 while 30 imported bikes and cars,were registered in 2016-17.

According to data obtained from the State Transport Authority (STA), the city imported only six (3 in 2016-17 and 3 in 2017-18) high-end vehicles (bikes and cars) in the last two years. During the same period, rest of TN registered 8 and 27 imported bikes and cars respectively.

Following demonetisation and introduction of GST, the state has merely registered 14 imported cars with the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) between 2016 and 2018 while the city has registered only two cars under this category. The State imported the highest number of two and four-wheelers (99 vehicles) in 2013-14 of which Chennai region alone had imported 27 imported bikes and cars.  Similarly, the State had imported the maximum number of luxury bikes (65) between 2013-14 of which, the city had registered 13 higher-end bikes. “When compared to last year, the market has slowed down. This year we registered a drop of 10-20 per cent.
