Busy MP delays toilet inauguration at Vadapalani bus depot
More than a year has gone by since new toilets were built for public use at Vadapalani bus depot, but the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is waiting for the MP’s appointment to put them to use. The facility was constructed with funds sanctioned under the MP Local Area Development fund.

Utilising the funds, estimated to be Rs 85 lakh, the transport corporation had erected a high-mast light and the toilet at the depot. “The existing toilet abutting the depot has been unusable for long. There, the hygiene and sanitation have been thrown to the winds, with an unbearable stench emanating from the toilet. Due to the absence of a public toilet, commuters are forced to relieve themselves in the public space adjoining the depot,” said an MTC bus driver attached to the Vadapalani depot.
Located in the heart of the city, many buses plying across various routes use the depot. Every day, tens of thousands of commuters visit the facility. “The corporation should give high priority to equip the depots located in the main parts of the city to provide more convenience to the passengers,” said a regular commuter. “We are waiting to get a green signal from the government. It is being delayed as the winter session of the Parliament is underway. It is likely to be inaugurated in the next week,” said a top official of the Corporation.
