“We are restoring 210 lakes and other water bodies in the city. But, since restoration is a short-term solution, we need to ensure that the spaces are taken care of.
That’s why we are considering if we can let people use the place and thus let them maintain it,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
The official said that allowing gatherings, such as small parties, sports activities at the lakes would make the local community to take the ownership of the lakes.
Unlike some lakes in the outskirts, which were restored and maintained by the residents and NGOs, the Chennai Corporation would restore the lakes itself and hand over to the residents for further upkeep.
“In areas such as Thiruvanmiyur, the residents conduct gatherings once and twice every month on the beach. This prevents the anti-social activities and defacing of the beach,” the official added.
“We have taken up restoring works of 63 water bodies with Smart City funds and 36 water bodies are being restored with the CSR funds,” he said.
