The protesting teachers entered the DPI complex on Friday morning amid tight security and organised a demonstration by cleaning the campus as scavengers demanding the government to look in to their pay issues with immediate effect.

Tension prevailed at DPI complex for a while during the office hours when agitating teachers started brooming the floors. The teacher’s strike started on Monday night, when the talks between Tamil Nadu School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan and the protesters failed to yield any solution.

On Wednesday, authorities from the School Education department held talks, but the teachers wanted to continue their protest as the government refused to promise to look into their issues with immediate effect.

In the last few days, more than 100 teachers, especially women were hospitalised after they swooned during the protest that was held in Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore.

The secondary school teacher association secretary K Robert said that his members were not asking any extra salary. “Our only demand was to give equal salary for the teachers who are in the same grade,” he claimed.

Robert also added that the government, which had promised the teachers, have failed to even constitute a committee to look into the pay anomalies.

However, a senior official from Education Department told that the present issue of the teachers was with the court and the government could not take any decision. “We just told them to wait till government submits its report in the court,” he said adding. “The issue is coming in the court in the next few days.”

The official also said that the government cannot disclose anything about its decision, which was demanded by the teachers, since it would lead to violate the court’s order.
