Residents complained that municipality officials have not placed proper dustbins in the locality and the SWDs are used to let out sewage in many places.

The situation is bad in streets such as Thatanmalai Street, Market Road, Periyatheru and Ratnasabapathi Street.

“But the situation in the bus stand is really worse making it impossible for the public to use it,” said Ramanathan, a local resident. “The stench from the garbage is unbearable. No one can stand even for five minutes in the bus stand,” he added.

When contacted, Chengalpattu Municipality Commissioner Mari Selvi said, “Fruits and vegetables sellers in the market dump waste in the stormwater drains resulting in blocks. We have warned them not do it again.”

She said the administration has planned to place dustbins in more places and appoint additional sanitary workers.

Chengalpattu Municipality has 33 wards with nearly one lakh people. Many people from surrounding areas travel to the town as it hasa medical college, law college, schools and the district prison.
