The woman SI, who is currently working at the Nungambakkam police station, reportedly met the Home Guard volunteer K Balachandran when she was posted at the Katpadi police station for training in 2016. As she did not like Balachandran’s behaviour, she started avoiding him. However, he started stalking the sub-inspector. Even after she told Balachandran that she is already married, he continued to stalk her.
Four months ago, Balachandran called the sub-inspector again and told her he was in love with her and wanted to marry her.
He also reportedly threatened to murder the sub-inspector’s husband and child if she doesn’t oblige to his proposal. Balachandran also used to frequently call the Nungambakkam police station saying that he was the woman sub-inspector’s husband.
Unable to put up with Balachandran’s harassment, the woman SI sought the help of her colleague and decided to meet Balachandran to put an end to it. Around 8.30 pm on Saturday, the woman SI and her male colleague met Balachandran in Egmore. However, Balachandran, who had come to the spot, with a thali (mangalsutra) got into an argument with them. He also threatened her at knifepoint and tried to tie her the thali. Shocked by Balachandran’s behaviour, the male colleague stopped him with the help of passers-by. Following this, he was handed over to the Egmore police. Two rings, a knife, mangalsutra, two-wheeler and a mobile phone were seized from him.
A case was registered against Balachandran under Sections 294(b) - uttering obscene words in a public place, 323 - voluntarily causing hurt, 506(2) - criminal intimidation of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. He was remanded in judicial custody on Sunday, said the police.
