“Ramalingam (63), a resident of Chinna Manikaran Street in Chengalpet, had taken the jewellery from a private bank at Vedhachalam Nagar in Chengalpet along with Rs 15,000 cash. He was heading back home when the incident occurred,” said the police.
At 3.30 pm, when he spotted five Rs 100 currency notes spilled on the road near Ramar Temple, Ramalingam stopped his motorbike and went on to pick it up, the police said. “After he collected the currencies, he noticed the box on his bike broken open and the valuables missing,” an officer said.
Realising that he had been conned by an attention diversion gang, he lodged a complaint with the Chengalpattu police station. The police were verifying CCTV footage to trace the suspects.
A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
