Two months on, no breakthrough in Avadi double murder

Despite releasing the photo of the main accused, the Avadi police have not made any breakthrough in connection with the robbery-cum-murder case of an elderly couple in Avadi in the past two months. The couple, Jegadeesan and Vilasini, was hacked to death by a domestic help and his wife from Andhra Pradesh on November 27 and the gold jewels from the house were missing.

However, the police managed to get the photo of the murder suspect Podilappu Suresh Kumar on the day of the incident as he had clicked selfies with the victim, Jegadeesan, in the latter’s phone. A week later, they also traced the CCTV footage of the accused boarding the train from Chennai Central along with his wife and child.

After that, there has been no progress in the case even as the special police teams travelled to Andhra Pradesh where Suresh is suspected to have gone into hiding. The police said that Suresh was a wanted accused in as many as 21 cases, including murders, in Andhra Pradesh as well.

As Jegadeesan (68) separated from his first wife and was living with Vilasini (58) whom he met while they were working in the government press, there was no pressure on police from their respective families to nab the accused, said sources. While Jegadeesan’s sons from his previous marriage are all married and settled, Vilasini from Andhra Pradesh was also separated from her husband.

According to the police, Suresh, his wife Bhulakshmi and their child were started working at Jegadeesan’s house just two weeks before the murder and were staying in the outhouse within the premises.

When contacted Avadi Assistant Commissioner B Jayaraman said that some crucial information has emerged during the investigation and they are closing in on the suspects. “They will be nabbed soon,” he added.

Similarly, the Tirumullaivoyal police remain clueless about a suspect, who brutally attacked a 15-year-old boy in the terrace of his house in Ayapakkam, a month ago. The police hit a dead-end in the case as the victim, V Jayakumar, who survived the attack, was not able to recognise the attacker. The incident happened on December 27 at Devi Nagar when Jayakumar was standing alone on the terrace. A masked man hacked him several times before fleeing the spot.
