The city police had formed a special team to nab the four men who duped a pawn broker of Rs 40 lakh by giving him gold painted jewels near Pallavaram three months ago.

Navarathana Lal, a former AIADMK councillor running a pawn shop at Indra Gandhi road in Pallavaram, was conned November 1 last year when four men from Rajasthan had visited his shop, offering to selling gold. They had told Navarathana Lal that they were from Rajasthan and were well known to some of his relatives.

They offered to sell a gold chain which was apparently worth Rs 1 crore but were ready to sell it for Rs 40 lakh as they urgently needed the money. The politician-cum-pawn broker bought it to realise later in December that he was duped. He then approached the police.
