Corporation to re-lay 833 interior roads at Rs 61 cr

As many as 833 interior roads in the metropolis are set to get an overhaul as the Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated the process of re-laying the roads.

“Of the total roads taken up for the re-laying, 180 roads are in Alandur zone while the remaining are spread out in Tondiarpet,Royapuram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Adyar and Perungudi zones,” a Chennai Corporation official said.


The official added that the relaying works of 833 roads with bituminous tar (BT) would commence during March end. “We have recently floated tenders in different packages. The total project cost is around Rs 60.93 crore.”


As per the data, 139 roads in Tondiarpet and Royapuram zones would be re-layed at a cost of Rs 16.20 crore, while 110 roads in Ambattur would be re-layed at Rs 12.40 crore.


“Rs 6.58 crore will be spent on 129 interior roads in Valasaravakkam, whereas Rs 12.52 crore will be spent for 180 roads in Alandur. As many as 213 roads in Adyar and Perungudi will be relayed at a cost of Rs 13.22 crore,” the official added.


When asked about the several allegations of shoddy work against the civic body in relaying roads, the official said that the civic officials are visiting the spots where roadworks are in progress to ensure proper milling of old roads to prevent the increase inroad levels.
