The injured persons were identified as R Ponni (20) of Walajabad and M Shalini (20) of Arpakkam village. Both of them are studying third year at Sri Krishna Engineering College in Keelambi village near Kancheepuram.
After the classes got over on Tuesday afternoon, Ponni and Shalini along with a few other students boarded a share auto to Kancheepuram. The police said that the vehicle was packed with 13 passengers. Meanwhile, two share autos without passengers on board came from the opposite lane. As they were racing against each other, one of them lost control and hit the share auto in which the college girls were travelling.
In the impact, the vehicle overturned. While the injured passengers were rushed to the Kancheepuram Government Hospital, Ponni, whose hand was reportedly severed, has been referred to the Stanley Medical College Hospital. Shalini is being treated at the government hospital with severe injuries while others escaped with minor injuries.
The Baluchetty Chatram police have registered a case and detained two share auto drivers. The local residents claimed that they are harrowed by share auto drivers, who drive in a rash manner to make maximum number of trips during the opening and closing time of the college.
