The petition dated January 21, 2019 was reportedly signed by more than 40 officers. It accused several jail officers, including the jail superintendent and his subordinates, of indulging in corrupt practices with help a few outsiders. According to the petition, a good number of jail inmates, including those in the high security section, enjoy contrabands like mobile phones, ganja, cigarettes and outside food with the help of the officers in the jail.
The petition also explains the modus operandi used by the corrupt officers. The inmate should pay Rs 2 lakh as the initial amount to a particular jail officer to avail the illegal facilities, the petition said. Senior Jail officers refused to comment on the petition from the wardens. In September 2018, DT Next carried a series of stories exposing the illegal facilities enjoyed by prisoners with photographs, which led to transfer of many officers and inmates from the Puzhal prison
