“We enlisted sniffer dog Tyson but unfortunately, he could not cope up with the unbearable smell of the garbage and got sick on the same day,” said Tyson’s handler Satish Babu. The one-year-old Labrador was new to the field and joined duty only in January 2019 after finishing training at Vepery. “Tyson contracted some infections and is getting treated in the hospital. However, he has still not recovered,” said Satish Babu.

Ten policemen along with the 10 conservancy workers have been deputed to search for Sandhya’s missing head at the dump yard.

They are digging through garbage from dawn to dusk to find the evidence, which is crucial for the case. A police officer said the garbage mound is 20-ft-high and they had to dig it with the help of earthmovers.

Albin Raj, Inspector of Pallikaranai police station, said, “It is very difficult to rummage through the garbage, all the cops, including me, got infected andsuffered from fever. The conservancy workers are able to manage this, but people like us could not even spend a day there.”

An officer also said that the search operation will come to halt within a few days as they are 90 per cent sure that the missing head is not in the dump yard.
