The victim was identified as Manikandan (40), a native of Krishnagiri. He owns a pawn shop there. He also sells used gold jewels, said the police. Two days ago, Manikandan received a phone call from a man, who introduced himself as Saravanavel from Kancheepuram.
He had told Manikandan that he owns a pawn shop in Kancheepuram and he has a stock of used gold jewels. He added that he is ready to sell the jewels at Rs 2000 per gram.
As Manikandan was interested in the deal, he asked Saravanavel if he could come to Krishnagiri to sell the gold. However, Saravanavel refused and asked Manikandan to come to Kancheepuram. He also told Manikandan that he would only accept cash. Following this, Manikandan informed him that would come to Kancheepuram on Sunday to get the gold.
While Manikandan reached Kancheepuram in a government bus, Saravanavel asked him to get down on Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road. He waited there for a while after which three men picked up Manikandan in a car. While the car was travelling in Vandavasi route, they asked Manikandan to count the cash.
The police said Manikandan had 10 bundles of 2,000 rupees notes. After making sure that Manikandan had the cash, one of them took out a gun and threatened him. The gang snatched his money and pushed him out of the car near Balluchetty Chathiram after beating him up.
Later, Manikandan filed a complaint with the Balluchetty Chathiram police station. The police have registered a case and trying to identify the criminals with the cybercrime wing. They are also trying to track the mobile phone signal of the person who called Manikandan.
