Initially, the passengers thought it was a python. However, the Forest Department officials from Velachery confirmed it was common sand boa.
The commuters noticed the three-feet-long snake rolled up on the third platform of the railway station around 8 pm on Sunday. Soon, they informed the employees at the ticket counter and the Tambaram railway police.
Following this, the Velachery Forest Department staff arrived and caught the snake. While the commuters claimed that it was python, the forest officials said it was a rare variety of common sand boa which only eats ants and insects. It will be kept in the forest office for 10 days. Later, it will be released into the forest, an official said.
The commuters claimed that there are many bushes around the railway station and it should be cleaned soon to prevent such incident in the future. A snake was found on the Sanatorium railway station subwaya year ago.
