With 39 wards separated as East and West Tambaram, the municipality is one of the major suburbs of the city. People from different parts of the State visit Tambaram railway junction to commute in or out of the city. Yet, the shelter in this major bus stop is in shambles, say locals.
Commuters claim that this bus stop which is inside the railway premises had a decent shelter but is now completely destroyed due to lack of maintenance forcing commuters to wait under the hot sun for boarding their bus. “With summer fast approaching, it will become a real ordeal to wait for buses even during morning and evening hours. Even now it is almost impossible to wait for buses in the afternoon,” said Santosh, a regular commuter from East Tambaram.
“The bus stop had not seen any development since the time it was constructed. Besides the shelter, there areno proper seating arrangements or display boards either,” he said.
Sources said that buses towards Chengalpattu will be operated from Tambaram and a bus station was constructed by the Tambaram municipality years back after getting permission from the railways.
However, municipality officials told DT NEXT that the railways had later claimed that they would be maintaining the bus shelter as it was on railway land. “So, we have not been able to do anything about it despite knowing about this issue for some time now,” he said.
Another commuter Kavitha from Tambaram said, “For many years, we are standing in a bus stop which has no shelter, the officials who are seeing this are not coming up to provide us a proper shelter.”
When contacted, the senior railway officials at the Tambaram railway junction said that they would be taking appropriate steps for repairing the bus shelter before peak summer.
