He came to the city to submit a petition at the DGP office to get a job in the police force on compassionate grounds.
The accused was identified as M Thetchina Moorthy (25) of Senkottai taluk, son of late policeman Murugaiah. While CMBT police initially let him off with a warning without booking him, the incident reached the senior officers forcing them to order an inquiry. Thetchina Moorthy was arrested under Sections 170 (personating a public servant) and 384 (extortion) of the IPC and remanded in judicial custody. The police said that a departmental inquiry has been initiated about the involvement of the constable attached to the CMBT police station in the case.
A few days ago, vendors at the Koyambedu market nabbed Thetchina Moorthy after they found him suspiciously wandering in the area and also taking photographs. He told the vendors that he was a policeman attached to the special branch CID. Following this, the vendors informed the police on suspicion.
Subsequently, he was taken to the police station for interrogation. He told the police that his father employed as a policeman and died on duty at Senkottai.
The police said that Thetchina Moorthy behaved like a policeman even before he was appointed, and he started questioning the vendors, who had allegedly violated rules and set up shops on the roadside. The police seized Thetchina Moorthy mobile and found several photographs of the shops occupying the spaceon the road.
“He threatened them to shift the shops inside the Koyambedu market,” the police said. Sources also noted that a constable from the CMBT police station had given him the green signal to extort money fromthe vendors.
