The Radial Road is regarded as highly vulnerable to floods during the rainy season as the stretch accommodates three lakes, including the Narayanapuram, Keelkattalai and Pallavaram lake. The widening of road is underway for the past eight months at the cost of Rs 81.85 lakh.
An official attached to the Highways said, “As part of the works, the strengthening, maintenance and improvement of the cross drainage will be undertaken. For this purpose, the existing 11KV electric lines at the radial road will be shifted temporarily.”
The project director of the Traffic and Transportation Forum V Subramani said, “This stretch is plagued with heavy traffic especially during the peak hours. The road is designed for the motorists with no space available for the pedestrians, who find it difficult to cross the road. However, the widening works are being carried out at a snail’s pace.”
Along with this, the authorities are planning to undertake a few more works. “A retaining wall will be constructed on the Radial Road at an estimated cost ofRs 97.10 lakh. The work order will be issued for the same and the actual work will commence in another two months,” an official said.
The improvement works will be carried out in MRTS bridge and Pallikarnai grade separator, including the ones on the service roads. Similarly, such works will be carried out on Marmalong bridge at Irumbuliyur Road, which will also be equipped with the drain and footpath at the selected places. These works will be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 73.98 lakh.
