The woman, Akshaya Jeniffer, has been suffering from severe stomach pain and uneasiness. She had also developed breathing difficulties after the condition worsened. She underwent several consultations at private hospitals before approaching experts at the government hospital.

Doctors who carried out the procedure said that she was found to have a huge swelling which filled up her entire abdomen which prevented her from breathing and walking properly. The swelling was suspected to be arising from her uterus or either of the ovaries. She was thoroughly investigated and posted for surgery.

The procedure was done by a surgical team comprising Dr Balamurugan, head of the department, General Surgery, Dr Gayathre Muthukumaran, professor of surgery, and Dr Sivakumar, professor of surgery, assisted by the anaesthetic team headed by Dr Naheed.

She had undergone Total Abdominal Hysterectomy with Bilateral Salpingo Oopherectomy. After a five-hour procedure, a huge mass measuring 40 x 35 x 25cm with seven litres of fluid inside it along with the ovaries, was removed. It weighed 22kgs.

After two days of admission in the ICU, Jennifer recovered fully and returned home. Dr S P Gayathre, Professor, Department of General Surgery said the condition was caused by hormonal changes. “Fibroids are common and they tend to cause discomfort. However, being a recluse and probably depressed, she had ignored the condition and didn’t have anyone to take her to the hospital. She had been ignoring the condition for a long time.”
