The EMU from the Beach reached the third platform of Tambaram railway station at around 11.30 am. It was scheduled to return to Chennai Beach within a few minutes. Three college students, who boarded the last compartment, a first-class coach, heard the sound of a child crying. When they looked underneath the seat, the boys found the child lying on a towel, with a feeding bottle placed near it.
They immediately informed the RPF personnel at the station, who rushed to the coach and recovered the baby from the train. Police said the child is about three-months-old. After seeing the abandoned child, other commuters gathered there and came forward to take care of the baby.
Soon, the Chengalpattu Child Helpline was informed. Two volunteers from there came to Tambaram and received the baby.
The baby was taken to the Egmore children’s hospital for a check-up. Police said the child would be sent to the government home in the city. The Tambaram railway police and the RPF have registered a case and are investigating as to who dropped the baby underneath the seats.
