Railway police nab train thief

The Railway police on Thursday arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly stealing valuables from passengers in air-conditioned compartments in express trains.

The accused, D Balaji of Erode, used to travel as a passenger after booking train tickets using fake identity cards and stole valuables from the passengers after they sleep. Immediately after the crime, he would get down from the train. Based on his confession, the police recovered 11 stolen mobile phones, 10 sovereigns of gold valued Rs 3 lakh from him. A team of GRP police personnel led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police Pandian and inspector P Kayalvizhi tracked the suspect, after they received several complaints about valuables being stolen in the train. The police personnel tracked the suspect, who was discontinuing his journey in the middle. The suspect was monitored and the special team nabbed Balaji. He was remanded in judicial custody.
