Coimbatore bizman held with bullets at city airport

A businessman, who was found carrying bullets in his baggage, was detained at the Chennai airport on Tuesday.

He was identified as Sabapathi (45) of Coimbatore, who had come to the city to take a flight to Bangkok at 1.30 am on Tuesday. While scanning his baggage, the CISF officers found that there was ammunition inside. When the officers inquired Sabapathi, he denied having any bullets in the baggage.


However, the CISF officials took Sabapathi to a separate room, checked his baggage and found 18 bullets (.32mm calibre) inside. During inquiry, Sabapathi said he has a gun license and failed to notice that the bullets were inside the bag. Following this, the CISF officers cancelled his trip and handed him over to the airport police for further inquiry.


During interrogating by the police, Sabapathi said that he handed over the pistol to the police station after the election dates were announced. Later in the afternoon, his assistant produced the original pistol license to the police. The police let him off after collecting a statement.


Sudan national dies at airport


A 51-year-old Sudanese national died of suspected heart attack minutes before boarding a flight toJeddah at Chennai airport on Tuesday.


The deceased was identified as O Avadudhaka Yusuf, a businessman. Yusuf had come to Chennai 15 days ago for treatment at a private hospital in Vadapalani. On Tuesday, he came to the airport to board the Saudi Arabia Airlines flight to Jeddah at 10.30 am.


As he was waiting to board the flight after finishing the security check, he collapsed. Other passengers alerted the security officers and the airport medical team rushed to the spot only to find that he had died. On information, the airport police visited the spot and sent the body for the Chromepet Government Hospital for autopsy.
