Police said that the neighbours of the deceased on Third Street, Agasthiyar Nagar last saw them on Monday night when the duo allegedly told them they were going to Pune as Sharmila has a job offer.
However, when a foul smell started coming from the house, neighbours alerted the police on Thursday evening.
The door was broken open and they were found hanging from the ceiling in a decomposed manner.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that Malathi and Sharmila could not overcome the death of Malathi’s brother Ashok Kumar, a software engineer, who committed suicide in Bengaluru, a fortnight ago.
“Malathi had decided to get Sharmila married to him, but his suicide traumatised the mother-daughter duo. They are suspected to have committed suicide out of depression,” the police said.
Their bodies were sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination and their kin have been informed of their death. They have also launched an investigation.
