Officials mounted a special inspection of trucks after receiving a tip-off that red sanders was smuggled out of the country from Kattupalli Port. They noticed a truck parked before the entry gate for a long time, but without a driver. Other drivers said they too did not see anyone near for a long time.
When they opened it, they found red colour wooden logs stuffed inside the truck. In the cabin, they found documents including shipping bill and gate pass, and also RC and permits. In the bill, the goods were declared as car accessories and parts meant for export to Dubai.
The container was brought to the Chennai Port. During examination, officials confirmed it was red sanders weighing about 16 tonnes worth Rs 5.57 core. They found that the registration number was different than the one mentioned in RC. When they tried to trace the owner, they found it difficult as the vehicle was resold many times.
The shipping liner staff who processed the documents before verifying the KYC documents was arrested and further investigations are on.
