62,000 new names in Chennai list can vote in Perambur, LS polls
According to the final electoral list released on January 31, there were 38.18 lakh voters in Chennai district that has 16 Assembly constituencies and three parliamentary constituencies.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has included names of nearly 62,000 voters in the updated electoral list. The newly added voters are eligible to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha election and the bypolls to Perambur Assembly constituency.
As per Corporation data available with DT Next, 67, 696 people submitted Form-6 (for including their names in the electoral list) between February 1 and March 16. “Even though we release the final electoral list annually, it is usual to accept forms throughout the year. Owing to poll announcement, we had stopped accepting forms after March 16 (10 days before the last date for filing nominations),” a Corporation official said.
The official added that of the total online as well as offline applications received for inclusion of names, 61,960 voters were added to the electoral list. Meanwhile, the civic body had also received more than 22,000 applications to delete names (Form-7) from the final list and 20,066 were deleted.
With the newly added names and deleted names, the number of voters in the Chennai district has increased to 38.60 lakh. In all, the civic body had received 1.06 lakh applications including Form-6A, Form-8 and Form-8A and of them, 92,633 applications till March 16.
Interestingly, 302 overseas electors applied for name inclusion, but the civic body accepted only 78 applications.
According to the final electoral list released on January 31, there were 38.18 lakh voters in Chennai district that has 16 Assembly constituencies and three parliamentary constituencies. In Perambur Assembly constituency, which is facing the by-election, 4,357 new voters have been added. As per the final voters’ list, the constituency has 2.91 lakh voters.
Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation Commissioner and District Election Officer G Prakash said that the newly added voters could vote using other identity cards, even if they fail to receive the voters’ ID.
