The accused, Mohanbabu of Raja Annamalai Puram, has been running Mohan Travels. A few weeks ago, one of his former employees damaged his car and a complaint was lodged with the Abiramapuram police.
During an inquiry, the travel operator was asked to submit the documents of the vehicle to issue a no-objection certificate to claim insurance.
When the police verified the documents, they found that Mohanbabu had forged the documents. “Some of his cars are brand new. But they are not registered with the Regional Transport Office. He used Registration Certificates and numbers of some other vehicles to use it for his fleet to evade taxes. He had only three RC books - one for three vans, one for two cars and another for two other cars - in his possession,” the police said.
The seized vehicles include three SML vans, Mahindra XUV, Mahindra Jeep, a Mercedes Benz and a Jaguar. They have been stationed at the operator’s premises and will be produced before the magistrate on Sunday.
Mohanbabu was arrested under Sections 465 (forgery) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of IPC as well as Motor Vehicles Act and remanded in judicial custody on Sunday. Further inquiry is on.
