Pubs cash in on IPL fever in Chennai
Pubs in the city are taking advantage of the IPL by launching various combos on the days of the match.

Since the first match on March 23, tables in pubs that filled up only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays after 8 pm are packed even on weekdays from 6 pm onwards, and business has increased by around 50 per cent, revealed representatives from various leading pubs in the city.
Bhaskar, Manager at Watson’s pub, said, “During CSK matches, we get 55 per cent more crowds than normal. During other matches, we see a 50 per cent increase in crowds.”
Typically, the offers are availed between 6 to10 pm or when the particular match gets over. Groups of 6 to 20 members watch the matches together and sometimes signing up for the offers that bring unlimited drinks to their table.
Offering unlimited domestic spirits and two vegetarian starters as well as two non-vegetarian starters for Rs 1595, the business for Bay 146 has almost doubled in the span of two weeks, said Sampath, the general manager of the pub.
“On CSK match days, if matches coincide with weekends especially, we witness a 40 per cent increase in the income. During other matches, there is a 30 per cent increase,” he said.
A representative from Radio Room in MRC Nagar said, “We have one TV and three projector screens telecasting the match. From 6 to 10 pm every Sunday to Thursday, customers can avail special IPL combos priced from Rs 500 to Rs 4,000.”
Sailesh Kumar (26), a chartered accountant in the city and a cricket enthusiast, said, “Watching a match with friends over drinks at a pub breaks away from the monotony of watching it at home. When CSK is winning especially, the entire crowd in a pub erupts in cheers -- it’s a great feeling.”
