Corporation’s work for poll day in full swing
With the polling day just a week away, the Greater Chennai Corporation has expedited the arrangements for the massive democratic exercise. Having completed the scanning of Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices, the urban body is set to commence the affixing of ballot papers to the ballot units from Thursday.

“For the first time, the ballot papers would contain photos of the candidates along with other details. The ballot papers have already been printed and ready to be affixed to the ballot units,” a Corporation official said.
He said the scanning of VVPAT devices was conducted to synchronise the electronic voting machines (EVM) and VVPAT devices. The official added that since the randomisation of EVMs has been completed, they could start affixing the ballot papers at the distribution centres.
The civic body would commence the distribution of booth slips in a couple of days. “Even though the booth slips will not be accepted as a valid document, voters can know their polling booth, part number and other details by going through the slips,” the official added.
Meanwhile, the civic body has appointed officials attached to its building department for each of the 16 Assembly constituencies in Chennai district to make arrangements at the polling booths.
“We will visit all the polling booths and prepare a report on the status of the facilities, such as availability of toilet and water. We will then take steps to rectify any problems found,” one of the appointed officials said, adding that they would visit the polling booths on April 17 to review the arrangements.
