Woman cuts son’s neck, then slits throat in suicide bid

The woman, Mamtha (30), and her son Raj (4) are undergoing treatment at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. They are said to be out of danger. The police said that the family hails from north India and has been staying in Srinivasan Nagar in Tirumullaivoyal for the past six years.

The incident happened on Monday night when Mamta’s husband Banu Prasath, who runs a pani puri shop in the locality, had gone out for work in Ambattur. When he returned after midnight, he found Mamta and their son lying unconscious in a pool of blood. After he raised an alarm, neighbours rushed to their rescue and sent both the mother and son to KMC in a 108 ambulance.

The police, on information, registered a case against Mamta for attempted-murder. An investigation revealed that Banu Prasath did not give money to buy new clothes for their son’s fourth birthday and there was a quarrel between the couple in this regard on Monday. “When Banu Prasath was away for work, Mamta cut her son’s wrist, neck and mouth before slitting her throat. The medical team had to administer several sutures on the boy to stop bleeding the deep wounds inflicted on him by his mother,” the police said. Further inquiry is on. “We will think of arresting her after she returns home from the hospital because she had attempted to kill her son,” the police added.
