Sholinganallur zonal officer (in-charge) T Sugumar said that the structures of OMR Food Street were unauthorised (built without planning permission) and the officials demolished the metal structures based on an order issued by the Madras High Court. “The structures had ground floor only,” he added.

OMR Food Street is a private firm that has six branches in the city apart from the demolished facility in Thoraipakkam and they were famous as many youngsters thronged there as food was available till late hours.

Meanwhile, Praveen Inbaraj, a spokesperson of the OMR Food Street said that they built the metal structure on the leased land and the lease ends in a few weeks.

“Thoraipakkam facility is our first that was started in 2014. We already had plans to remove the metal structures and replace them with concrete structures. We have informed our tenants (eateries) about the issue and moved them to our other facilities,” he added.

While a regular customer said that one can get all types of food at OMR Food Street, local residents welcomed the demolition move saying that the shops created issues such as haphazard parking and noisepollution.
