Alert ex-cop nabs youth who snatched his wife’s chain

A youth who tried to flee after snatching 2.5 sovereign chain from his wife in Royapettah on Sunday night was nabbed by her husband, who turned out to be a retired policeman.

Lakshmikanthan, a retired sub-inspector from Royapettah, and his wife Bhagavathi, were out for a walk on Gangaiamman Koil street around 10.30 pm when a bike-borne duo snatched Bhagavathi’s 2.5-sovereigns chain and tried to flee. However, alert Lakshmikanthan managed to catch hold of the pillion rider by his shirt collar, who fell on the road and sustained injuries on his head. The rider panicked, and left the bike at the spot before escaping from the spot.


On information, Mylapore police rushed to the spot and rescued the pillion rider. He was identified as G Boopalan (21) of Mattankuppam. He has been admitted at the government hospital for treatment. The robbed chain and the two-wheeler were seized. A hunt has been launched for the absconding youth.


Similarly, Marina police have arrested a 29-year-old man after passers-by nabbed him when he tried to escape with a half-sovereign chain of woman pedestrian. The accused, G Karthik (29) of Ponneri, is history-sheeter in Ponneri police station with four such cases pending against him. He was remanded in judicial custody. Meanwhile, a college student was robbed of his mobile phone and Rs 1,000 in cash by an unidentified trio in Puzhal. The incident happened when Velmurugan of Kodungaiyur went to the Puzhal lake near the cattle market to bathe. He has lodged a complaint at Puzhal police station.
