NHAI General Manager receives Rs 27 lakh as bribe, arrested

Sleuths from the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested the General Manager (Technical) of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), based in Madurai, for allegedly seeking and accepting Rs 27 lakh for clearing a bill due to a contractor for a work completed for the department. Three other persons were also arrested along with him.

The official, identified as Gali Sridhar, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI on Sunday in Hyderabad in connection with the bribe case. The team also arrested Sudhakar Vaduppu, assistant manager of NSS Infrastructure, Pawan, an employee of the firm, and Sai Prasad, a relative of the official. In this case, the CBI has also arrested the person who gave the bribe, said sources.


The accused official had demanded and accepted illegal gratification of Rs 27 lakh for clearing the bills of NSS Infrastructure pertaining to the ongoing work on NH 7 Madurai-Kanniyakumari stretch. NSS Infrastructure had taken up the work as a sub-contractor of KNR Constructions.


The FIR that the CBI filed said that the construction work estimates and bill of NSS Infrastructure are pending with regional office NHAI, Madurai, and as the GM (Technical), Gali Sridhar was the competent official to clear the bills. He had asked the bribe to clear the pending bills.


“On the instructions of Sridhar, the bribe amount given by Sudhakar was carried by Pawan, an employee of NSS Infrastructure from Hyderabad, and delivered to Sai Prasad in Kadapa on Sunday. The CBI team trailed Pawan till Kadapa and nabbed them while handing over the bribe amount,” the release said.


The four accused – Sridhar, Sudhakar, Sai Prasad and Pawan – were arrested and searches were conducted at six places, including the office and residential premises of the accused in Hyderabad, Kadapa and Madurai. They were booked under sections of the Prevention of Corruption of Act and criminal conspiracy.
