The deceased, Thamizhselvan (56) of Maduravaveerar Kalaivanar Nagar in Padi, was a fruit seller and the accused, Suriyaprakash aids his mother Tamizharasi, who runs another fruit shop in the locality. On Monday night, Thamizhselvan reached home early and went to sleep without having dinner.

Tamizharasi and Suriyaprakash, who reached home late after closing the shop, woke up Thamizhselvan for dinner. However, as he refused to eat and abused Suriyaprakash, a quarrel erupted between them. Suriyaprakash, who was under the influence of alcohol, picked up a kitchen knife in a fit of rage and stabbed Thamizhselvan in his chest and fled the spot.

Neighbours, who rushed to their house on hearing the noises, took Thamizhselvan to a nearby hospital but he was declared brought dead. His body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Based on a complaint, the JJ Nagar police registered a case and launched a hunt for Suriyaprakash. He was later secured from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) and booked under Section 302 and 506 of IPC. He was remanded in judicial custody.
