Police managed to nab Velankanni (38) who is the main accused. Sources said that police on Thursday night managed to identify her two children, and on Friday night, with the help of the children, the investigators zeroed in on her near Kancheepuram. Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police Santosh Hadimani confirmedthat Velankanni was detained and that a team was questioning her.

Earlier in the day on Friday, after finishing medical examination at the Maduranthagam government hospital, the 16-year-old victim was taken to the Uthiramerur court for recording her statement in front of the magistrate.

The minor girl is from an economically poor background. After finishing Class 10, her parents decided to send her for a job.  Velankanni, the girl’s neighbour, brought her to Chennai five months ago saying that there was a job for looking after the kids. She also gaveRs 5,000 for the girl’s parents as advance. The girl was later allegedly pushed into prostitution.

The family members of the girl came to know that she was caught in flesh trade when she came to visit them last weekend for Easter. The family later lodged a complaint with the Kancheepuram SP.
