At 40 degrees, city records hottest day of the year

The city witnessed the hottest day of the year on Tuesday with mercury rising above 40 degrees Celsius in both Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations.

While Nungambakkam recorded 40.1 degrees Celsius, Meenambakkam recorded 40.2 degrees Celsius during the day. Other parts of the State also recorded high temperatures with Tiruttani recording a highest of 42 degrees Celsius. Tiruchy and Vellore recorded 40.7 degree Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius respectively.

As per the Regional Meteorological Centre, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy for next 48 hours with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 38 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius respectively. 

Weather blogger Pradeep John stated that the temperatures are likely to rise in the city towards the weekend. Though cloudy weather and light showers is expected on Wednesday, the temperatures will rise after that. Due to Cyclone Fani, the strong northwest winds will intensify and increase the temperatures in Vellore, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Villupuram and Cuddalore.

However, several parts of Kanniyakumari received about 8 cm of rainfall while other districts including Salem, Madurai and Theni also received light to moderate rainfall.
