The police said that the driver was in an inebriated condition. The CCTV footage of the entire incident, which was recovered by the cops, shows horrific images of a speeding Innova fatally knocking down one of the deceased and hitting another, before dragging her out of sight.
The deceased were identified as D Mohan alias Madhana Gopal (45) of Villivakkam and Sarasa Chandrasekhar (65) of Annai Sathya Nagar. Aathilakshmi Murugesan (50) suffered leg injuries in the accident.
It all started with Devendran, a realtor and resident of Mannadi Street in Villivakkam, trying to reverse the SUV near Villivakkam and hitting Athilakshmi, who was walking on the road. Hearing her screams for help, residents and road users gathered on the spot and came to her rescue. As they were trying to stop the vehicle, the panicked driver sped away, fearing the crowd.
Devendran sped through a narrow lane and hit Mohana Gopal and Sarala, killing them both. While Mohana Gopal was fatally knocked down on the spot, Sarasa’s body was dragged by the car and came off the vehicle near her house before the car sped away.
Shocked residents chased the car. As the stretch was closed due to Metro water work, he had to abandon the vehicle and take off on foot. When Devendran tried to escape, he was nabbed by the public. He was badly beaten up before handed over to the police.
The police found that he was drunk and booked him for drunken and negligent driving.
According to the police, around 7.30 am, Devendran took the route through Annai Sathya Nagar while returning to his house in Villivakkam as the service lane on Padi flyover was blocked. As he entered the street, he lost control of the vehicle and first rammed into a junction box. When he was reversing, he knocked down Adhilakshmi, injuring her legs. He then ran over the other two victims, the police said narrating the sequence of the event. The incident was recorded on a CCTV camera on the street. It showed the speeding red Innova fatally knock down Mohana Gopal and then hit Sarasa, who was heading to a shop in the area.
The Thirumangalam traffic investigation wing police have booked Devendran for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and arrested him. The police have seized the vehicle, too.
