The victim A Jessy of Koyambedu was admitted at the hospital on May 3 for a throat surgery. Jessy said that she gave her 7.5 sovereign mangalsutra and four sovereigns of bangles to her mother Glory before going into the operation theatre. While Glory kept the valuables in her handbag and left it in the room, she found the zip of her bag open when she returned after a while to see the jewels gone missing.
Glory lodged a complaint at Virugambakkam police station on May 4 and received a Community Service Register (CSR) copy. According to Jessy, the hospital staff had allegedly threatened her to vacate the room as they have already got her written acknowledgement saying that the hospital is not responsible for the stolen jewels. “One of the doctors in the hospital threatened us that he has killed so many people and asks us not to meddle with him,” Jessy said. Jessy said that she opted for a shared room in the hospital as it was a minor surgery and suspect that the other occupant of the room could have escaped with jewels.
“The hospital administration refuses to share the details of them, but they are bringing politicians to threaten us every day,” she added. When contacted, Virugambakkam police said that they are still inquiring about the theft.
