The civic body has identified 101 vacant plots to build multilevel parking facilities in the city under a Rs 2,000-crore comprehensive integrated parking management project, which was announced in the State Assembly. “Of the 101 proposed multilevel parking facilities, 24 facilities will have commercial spaces to be rented out. This will augment the revenue earned from charges collected from vehicle owners,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
According to officials, the 24 places would include Broadway, Richards Park on Anna Salai and near Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur. “The project will be entirely funded by private players under build, operate and transfer basis. They will collect charges and rents from the users and share the revenue with the civic body,” the official added.
However, the project would be submitted to the State government for its approval and the completion of the projects would take a minimum of two years.
Earlier, Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash had directed the zonal level engineers to identify the vacant plots in their respective zones. The identified lands belong to Chennai Corporation, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and other government departments.
The civic body has already started the construction of multilevel parking in T Nagar.
